Why a Shared Standard?

The ICAO standard was developed so facial recognition systems can correctly read passport and ID photos. Turkey, like most countries, bases its e-passport and biometric ID card systems on this standard.

Core Rules (Apply Across Turkey)

• Background: plain white or light grey, no shadows.
• Head size: the distance from chin to crown should fill a set proportion of the frame (roughly 32–36mm as a reference range).
• Expression: neutral, mouth closed, looking straight at the camera.
• Glasses: should be removed if possible; if required, no glare and eyes fully visible.
• Recency: if your appearance has changed noticeably, get the photo retaken.

Common Mistakes

The most frequent rejection reasons are a shadowed or colored background, smiling, a non-standard head size, and wearing sunglasses. In places that don't check the shot live, these mistakes can slip through unnoticed.
