Visa Photo by Country
Schengen Visa Photo Requirements: What's the 35x45mm Standard?
Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Greece and every other Schengen-area country apply the same photo standard for visa applications, based on ICAO's international biometric rules.
| Criterion | Rule |
|---|---|
| Size | 35mm x 45mm |
| Head height (chin to crown) | 32–36mm |
| Background | Plain white or light grey, no shadows |
| Expression | Neutral, mouth closed, looking straight ahead |
| Recency | Taken within the last 6 months |
| Glasses | Generally discouraged; if required, no glare |
Some Schengen consulates (particularly Germany and France) may ask for additional requirements. Check the specific consulate's visa page before applying.
Common Mistakes
A colored or shadowed background, smiling, a non-standard head ratio, and an outdated photo (older than 6 months) are the most frequent rejection reasons.
