Passport Photo: Common Mistakes to Avoid

August 22, 2026 · studyoXu

A passport photo is one of the most common uses for a biometric photo, and the last thing you want is your application bounced back over a small mistake. Here's what to check before your shoot:

Clothing

Avoid wearing clothing the same color as the background (white/light grey) — it can blend in and confuse the outline. Uniforms and camouflage patterns are generally not accepted.

Hair and Forehead

Make sure your hair doesn't cover your eyes or eyebrows. Long hair should be tied back so it doesn't obscure your face.

Glasses

Shoot without glasses if you can. If you must wear them, make sure there's no glare or shadow on the lenses, and the frame doesn't cover your eyes.

Makeup and Accessories

Heavy makeup or filters/retouching that change your appearance aren't accepted — the photo needs to reflect how you actually look. Avoid jewelry that covers part of the face (earrings are fine).

Expression

Mouth closed, neutral expression, looking straight at the camera. Smiling or an angled pose is a common reason for rejection.

How Recent the Photo Should Be

If your appearance has changed noticeably (haircut, beard, weight), it's best to get a fresh photo taken.

At studyoXu, most of these are checked live during the shoot, so you can be confident in your photo before you apply. See our biometric photo service →
